Exploring the Future of Construction with Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality

Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) can be used to create immersive and interactive 3D models of buildings, allowing construction professionals to visualise, test design options, identify issues and make design changes in real-time.
They can also be used for virtual mock-ups, collaboration, virtual training, digital twin, virtual walkthroughs for potential buyers or renters, reducing costs, waste and errors in the construction process, improving collaboration, communication and safety.

In BIM, AR and VR can enhance collaboration, improve communication, and increase the accuracy of design, construction, and maintenance of buildings.

AR and VR can be used by civil engineers to visualise and test designs for infrastructure projects, create virtual simulations and site inspections, create virtual training simulations, digital twins, visual aids for presentations, improving safety, monitoring and maintenance, communication and accuracy of design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure projects by using BIM.

According to a study by MarketsandMarkets, the global AR and VR market in construction is expected to grow from $1.4 billion in 2019 to $6.4 billion by 2024, at a CAGR of 35.5%. This rapid growth is driven by the increasing demand for improved collaboration, visualisation, and safety in the construction industry. Scan-to-BIM is particularly valuable for retrofit and renovation projects, where existing building information is often incomplete or inaccurate.

By using 3D scanning technology to capture the existing conditions of a building, architects, engineers, and builders can create a more accurate and detailed BIM model. This improves collaboration, reduces errors, and ultimately results in a more successful project.

In conclusion, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are the future of construction. They offer new ways to visualise and interact with building information, making the design and construction process more efficient and effective. Scan-to-BIM, in particular, is a powerful way to utilise these technologies, allowing for the creation of accurate and detailed BIM models from existing buildings.

At Ascend School of Construction Business, we understand the potential of these new technologies in the construction industry, which is why we have included an introduction to AR and VR in our BIM course, specifically focusing on the Scan-to-BIM process.
